The York Hotel
In the fall of 2011, Sydney Lancaster and myself got a rare chance to visit Edmonton's infamous York Hotel shortly before it's demolition in 2012. Our collaboration began with the photographic documentation of the space; a storied building with a central place in the history of Edmonton's boom and bust East downtown. Our images captured spaces that were abandoned and relatively untouched for the two years the York had been boarded up. Images that show pale patches of wall where pictures once hung, stained carpets, gift bags, stickers on bathroom mirrors, and toothbrushes by the sink. These belongings are testament to the ways that the room of the York were home...at least for awhile.
